I am really happy with these tires

I purchased these Generals from Tire Rack for $100 a piece with a $50 rebate after running the OE Michelins for the last 8 years. I can report that this tire is every bit as good as the Michelin and has a better treadwear rating to boot. This saved me about $400 on a set of 4, not chump change by any means.

These tires (the Altimax HP) are among the highest-rated on Tire Rack's website. Tread pattern is cool, the only downside is that they are directional so they can't be rotated side-to-side without dismounting the tire from the rim. So for anyone looking to go for a new tire, give these a look.

I assign a lot of importance to the comfort level of the tires. How do the 18s and 19s compare to the 17s??

For small sport cars Yes, there might be some performance benefit with larger wheels and tires. But for this Bigarse SUV, there is probably none. 19s will only improve the looks, thats about it. If you dont care about the looks of your car, stay with 17". Its the most comfortable and efficient driving setup.

There is a noticable performance difference between 17's and 19's with stiff wall summer tires in cornering/handling....if throwing a 5,000 SU(A)V into corners and on/off ramps is your thing. But you will suffer some ride comfort - less tire wall = less cushion.

Now, 19's to 22's is all about the bling bling but hey if thats whatcha like then go right ahead and enjoy the look...

Avon Ranger Ice tyres are very good , we have them on X3 , changed from Michelin MXV4 , i tried an X3 with Pirelli Scorpian tyres before buying Avon but did not like Pirelli .

I have the General Altimax HPs on my X as well in 17" size. I LOVE it. Ride is incredibly quiet, smooth and handling is great. I can't believe how it handles rain - you literally feel like you're still on dry pavement. I've had them on for 5K miles now.

It doesn't rain where I live but I really like the tires -- had them for six weeks now.

I especially like the price. Can't believe they're half the price of the Michelins.
