No start. What is that?

Before I went reading Bentley, maybe somebody knows off-hand...

Just picked up my wife, left X in a park. It just didn't start. I don't hear anything.. No click, no buzz, nothing. Radio, lights, remote all work so it's not a battery.

Is there starter relay? WHere is that? What else I need to look for?

Thanks!

Could be a number of things, including the DME and EWS loosing sync with the rolling codes. Could be the transponder in that key died, could be the starter solenoid (built onto starter) crapping out... etc. I'd try another key first, then just for the hell of it try a jump start... then maybe try a battery reset by taking off the battery cable for the hell of it. Other than that it may be time for either the dealer or a competent indy shop with the proper BMW tester (GT1) and knowledge of the BMW systems.

I got GT1, remember?

Ok.. First thing Bentley manual says - try another key. I sent wife there and yes, another key works. So, at least car is running.

Now.. Main key opens/closes doors and trunk fine but no start. Can I "fix" that key with what I have? GT1, car, etc..

I have 2 keys. 1 key starts the car but can't open/close and another key opens/closes. Sweet!

Thanks!

Ok, the key that starts it should be able to be reinitialized to open/close via the procedure on this site. (key on & off then hold the lock while presing the unlock etc.)

But it sounds like you need to buy another key.

Was able to initialize with second method (5 times ... etc) With regular method I heard lock unlock but key didn't open anyway. Now I have 2 keys that open/close car and only one starts the car.

Is it transponder that went bad inside key?

Looks like I do need to pay for new key. Now I scared to have only 1 awailable..

Sounds like it. If you don't need another full key you could get the metal service key for a lower cost an just keep the bad key with it for the remote functions. Good enough for a spare setup if you ask me .

i am currently having the same problem. i'm going to attempt to reprogram the key that starts the car but doenst unlock. if i put the startable key in then put the other non-startable key it it starts. i guess the working key informs the computer that all is well before i swap out.

tried to reprogram the working (startable) key's push buttons with no luck. i think i may have erased the working push button key's program... cause it didn't seem to work after. oh boy.
