04 X5 Steering problem *worried*

Hello all,

My wife and daughter left for a two day trip and she just called me to tell me that she had a problem with the steering wheel. Apparently she tried to make a right at an intersection but she couldn't... she could only steer left and not right. She stopped, turned off the engine, restarted it and the problem went away... A local mecanic told her that he could not find anything wrong with the steering system... The only thing he could hear was a light whistle-like sound when turning the steering wheel (he could only hear it from the inside of the car)... all fluids were ok.

A similar issue happened to me a couple of years ago (same car) when all of the sudden, while steering right at about 5mph, the car just stalled...

Could both events be related? Any experience with this?

... They are about 150 miles away and about 70 from their destinationI told her to drive carefully and to get there and that I will pick-them up tomorrow... Or should I tell them to leave the car where it is and not drive it at all?

BTW, I did ask her if she was driving next to a curb when all of the sudden she could not turn right ...

Thanks for any advice!

x5 3.0l needs a software update to correct stalling, steering dont know, could be from binding steering rack.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
On some X5s the metal u-joints on the steering shaft under the hood binds at times, mine is starting this as well... One quick patch is to saturate the joint with penetrating lube, otherwise replacement.

When you get a chance to drive it see if the binding seems to be heavy spots/light spots when turning the wheel as if the joints have tight spots.

steering shaft

Weasel i have an 02 3.0i and it is starting the tight steering as well. mechanic says $600. I do most of my own maintenance and repairs so i think i can handle doing it. Do you know of the part number in particular? is it the whole shaft or what? Did it require special tools? is it just part of the steering shaft or is it the whole thing from the firewall to the steering rack?
