I have a 4.6, I had a 4.4 and my dad just got a 3.0. I was really surprised how well the 3.0 moved!

You should drive both, the 3.0 might be plenty of car for you.

I live in the ny/nj area get the 4.4 with sport for 2 reasons 1 you just got rid of a pretty peppy car going to 3.slow is not going to fill that void 2 you said it yourself 3.0 dime a dozen 4.4 better resale an as far a gas mileage in real world my friend has 3.0 an I have a 4.4 we get the same gas mileage both r 05's

i think this is partially true. I believe the EPA cities are the same, which would be more consistent with what we've been finding as similar gas mileage between the 3.0 and 4.4, but on the highway rating, where the 4.4 does a tad better, I believe it. Mom has a 04 3.0 manual, and I have an 06 4.4. I was able to average between 21-23 mpg on the highway, where the 3.0 afaik churns at a higher RPM at a given speed than the 4.4. i could be wrong on this. however, I do know my 4.4 gets better highway mileage than the 3.0 manual.

now, with the added power, typical gas useage of the 4.4 would tend to be more than the 3.0, but it doesn't mean it doesn't have the capability to be better. it's more a function of self control from the driver.

Personally, I probably wouldn't own a BMW without the sport package. If I didn't tow, I probably wouldn't required the 4.4. So depends on your needs. (Plus the 4.4...it's partly a guy thing, between buddies!)

Push harder on the 3.0 price and if you get it, even better.

I have the 3.0 with the Sport/Prem package. I am happy with the ride. Flat land where I am so did not see the need for the V8. It is a great SAV. I also have a Lexus RX330 that my wife drives now. I like them both but I prefer the ride of my X5.

another 3.0 fanatic here. personally don't think the extra 300 lbs is worth 65 ponies. 3.0 feels faster to me.

edit_those stats may be off for the valvetronic systems.

I have the 3.0 and the 4.8 X5's and the 3.0 has plenty of power. The 4.8 is a more effortless power. Just touch the gas and gone! Unless you really want the extra power, the 3.0 is fine. The 3.0 feels easier to drive for some reason too. Weight? Maybe I'm just used to driving it because it's older and been around longer and just feels more familiar, I don't know. I'm sure either one will be ok as long as it's got the options you want.
