Errr.... I don't know how, but I'm pretty sure the odometer can be turned back with no error message / light and little cost.
When I bought my X last year, MY2002 4.6, it had just over 30,000km on the clock! For a 6 year old car?! But knowing I would not trust the clock when buying any used car here, I took the car to my trustable workshop for an inspection before I made the final decision. The car definitely look more than 30k km, but still in pretty good condition and price for a MY2002. Again, I don't know how it can be done but for myself, I never trust the reading on the clock when I evaluate a used car, at least in this part of the world!

if the carfax report got cleared up instantly then i see no reason to worry but like someone said previously you are probably better off waiting for the perfect one to come along, so you never have the thought at the back of your head that it could of been a tampered ODO X or a lemon of any sort.
I waited 2 years before i bought mine... craigslist and autotrader everyday, until one day i was just doing a drive by and found my X in the lot... it was never posted online but checked out clean! |

The force is strong in you! I waited all of about 10 minutes before deciding to buy mine.

I'm sure odometer tampering happens more than we care to think about.
But in this case, it makes absolutely no sense to roll back from 10,000 to 7,500. If anything, you would roll back from say 80,000 to like 40,000. So I would not sweat it. Go for it and enjoy your X! |

I think you're in the clear. The milage is stored in two different modules, which must agree. If you replace either, it must be reprogrammed by the dealer (or an indie with a $3500 computer) before the engine will start. The visible odometer only reports what the two modules are telling it. Must have been a clerical error - why would anyone go to that much trouble for 3K miles?
Buy it - you'll like it! |
