Does it mean anything that one tire has worn more?

My wife just called to tell me that the rear right tire had thread showing! Does it mean anything that this one tire has more wear than the others?

Guess a trip to tirerack or discounttire is in order? Am I okay for them to do the balancing instead of the dealer?

Sounds like you need a wheel alignment. An out of balance tire usually doesn't manifest as excessive wear.

Or perhaps your wife is doing burnouts in the parking lot?

could be:

alignment
mismatched tire (one tire could be same size/type, but different spec)
low/high tire pressure

def check the alignment. i dunno if they can do a thrust alignment on AWD? or something similar and call it something else. that one wheel may be out of balance, or maybe someone hit it in a parking lot, or you drove over a good size pot hole and it threw it out of line.

in theory driving with one bald tire and one that looks new is bad for the differentials. (which is why the spare is full size)

it could even be your bushing. when accelerating or braking, if the control/thrust arms move around too much, the wheel/tire can change toe, which will greatly accelearte wear

98% of the time its going to be due to low tire pressue.

To rule out another .01% chance, your wife doesn't happen to drive Nascar does she?

Turned out to be poor alignment, both the rear tires were worn more than the front and on the inside of the tires. Ended up replacing all 4 anyway (needed to be done soon so why not now?) with the same as we got the X with: Michelin Energy MXV4. Quoted $236 per tire at discounttire.com, booked in at America's Tire Company and they rebated me 1/2 a tire cost for each of the front 2 because we only got 30,000 from them when they were warrantied for 60,000! So although quoted $1100 installed, it came to just under $850! Big shout out to ATC!!!
