Question Speedometer, ABS, and Traction light help!!!

I just had the ABS unit rebuilt, because I was told that was the problem with my vehicle. Like the title says speedometer doesn't work, ABS light is on and the traction control light is on. I have a 2001 E53 4.4i.

I was all excited, received my rebuilt unit on Thursday and installed it. Followed the directions on the install. Well, that did nothing, still everything misfunctioning. I called the place that rebuilt the unit and they told me that not all X5's are plug and play with this unit. I may have to have the vehicle hooked up to a computer to have it relearn the unit is functioning, OK I said.

Friday afternoon I drove the SAV and I looked down and the speedo was working and all the lights were off!! I was elated!!! Thought to myself maybe it learned on its own. Let the thing sit in the driveway for 5 minutes then left to go to dinner. Nothing again, what gives??? Does this sound like a sensor that is going bad, maybe a wheel speed sensor? I am confused and need some advise.

Sorry for the long story, but can anybody give me anymore ideas on what could be wrong??? Please help me.

Thanks,
Todder

Weasel will become famous soon enough
Try swapping your left rear abs sensor with your right rear. Both rears are the same. If the speedometer starts working even when the ABS light comes on then it is the sensor.

But it may be time to bite the bullet and get a proper diagnosis done at the dealer as half the time the left rear sensor throws faults it's the instrument cluster malfunctioning. Half the time the right rear sensor throws faults it is the DSC unit malfunctioning. etc. It takes someone with the proper diagnosis equipment that can read all info from the system, and that person having a deep personal knowledge of the system to properly diagnose it. And I know the dealer costs more than an indy shop, but you likely wouldn't have spent $$$ having a DSC unit rebuilt that from the sound of it wasn't the problem.

Thanks everybody for your input. Today the thing seems to be working, but I will take it in and get the thing checked out. I was starting to wonder if it was the abs sensor.

Thanks again,
Todder

Just wanted to send out a thanks to erisol, vivanov1, and Weasel. Took it in to a local Indy, got the sensor replaced and everything is working. He had a very hard time removing the sensor. Thanks so much for your help.

Hello everyone,
I have the ABS traction lights on aswell but my speedo works. The live data on the scanner shows 0 Mph and the generic P0500 code. Dealer wants a hundred bucks to pull the codes. I can replace both sensors on the rear for that. What are your suggestions? Thanks for your time!
