Need Help Please! Engine Light On
I bought this X5 and have owned it for 3 weeks (2001 3.0). This truck has spent more time on my driveway and in the shop than the streets. -white smoke out of tailpipe = Oil Separator Valve -Battery drain = new battery and Final Stage Resistor DIY -Loud clunking noise = passenger side ball joint, LCA and a bunch of bushings. -Rear brakes DIY -Bad Wheel Bearing = Fix soon. Over $2000's already in 3 weeks, believe it if you're planning to buy one. This forum has helped me so much in diagnosing, I'm lurking and using the search function EVERYDAY. I'd like to enjoy my truck soon but I was driving hard up a big hill and the ENGINE LIGHT came on. I pulled off the highway and noticed that when I was at a complete stop, the car was shaking hard but when I started driving towards my house it the shaking lessened. It was shaking hard at a stop. Turned the car off, waited, turned her back on and the light wasn't showing again. Test drove it, the light came back on and hasn't left me since. But the car doesn't shake anymore at stops. I called around, to have my engine light scanned, it'll cost me a minimum of $100's. Before I do this, I wanted to know if anyone on the board can share any knowledge about my problem? That's a long first post, my apologies. Help me so I can start modding and enjoying this vehicle! |

I also noticed my fuel consumption has gone way up!
On a regular day it ranged from 13.8 L/100 KMS to 14.2 L/100 KMS When I was test driving it again today it was up at 22 L/100 KMS at a point! Funny thing was it started decreasing by the second and only came down to the lowest point of 17.5 L/100 KMS I hope this can point me somewhere. |

Engine light can indicate many things.. You need to get the error codes. Go to Autozone and ask them to pull the codes for you for free and then report back to this forum.

Canadian Tire should be able to pull the codes for you, for free.

$100 to pull the code
this is insane. For much less than that you can buy yourself an OBD2 scan tool and pull and reset the code yourselfOBD II SCANNER OBD2 2 SCAN TOOL CODE READER OBDII ENHAN:eBay Motors (item 380132746653 end time Jun-24-09 06:45:00 PDT) |

Got the error code scanned for $20's at a local mech. shop.
He only reported one code P1351 Misfire Cylinder 5 With Fuel Cut-off (BMW) He cleared the code, now it's gone but Im sure it'll come back. What is this problem? The X5 is so slow now, no power at all. |

I've searched previous threads on this code, no one's really been able to "solve" the problem.
