X5 4.6 5hp24 transmission jerks, when car comes to complete stop. Possible solution.

Hello Everybody.

At first I want to apologize for my English, as it is my second language. My native language is Russian.

I have found that a lot of people have a problem with jerking when the car comes to a complete stop. (when it shifts from 3-2 or 2-1 gear) I also have found a temporally solution on some Russian forums. My transmission is getting rebuilt since my TC has failed. The solution is pulling of a mainspring of a valve of switching of 3-2 gear.

If someone could tell me where it is located in a valve body, I will let you know if it helps.

Thank you very much,
Arseniy Sumskoy

Kak dela.

Yes there were a bunch of pictures from RRPhil on here with the valve body descriptions. I will try to find it for you, but I hope he sees this and replies. He is way, way more knowledgeable than any of us here.

Look through that. Not our valve body, but similar. Once you drop the pan, you should be able to see the valve body.

Pic 5, 7 and 8 is the valve body.

OK, Guys.
Here is update on my "stretching the spring in valve body" - Failed BIG TIME, I suppose.
We stretched those springs (pic 1 and 2), and now my car stalls after it shifts to 2nd gear. When you put into Manual mode 1st gear good, as soon as you hit 2nd - stalls, feels like your slam in your brakes BIG TIMES. That is how it feels. My Mechanic says it feels that valve body engages 2 gears at the same time. Engaged 2nd gear without releasing the 1st one. Is it possible? We also disconnected valve bode to see if it can go is safe mode and it does. It goes well but I suppose on 3rd gear only.

So I was hopping RRPhil could take a closer look at what we did. Or maybe my mechanic made a mistake when putting all the mechanical part together.
Tomorrow I am going to see if resetting adaptation will help.
P.S. RRphil, I was trying to send you a PM message but this function at your profile is turned off.
Please help me out here.

SlickGT1, thanks man for looking for those threads.

I have seen then couple times and read all the posts that RRPhil made. I was trying to PM him but that feature is turned of at this profile.

I don't really know where else we need to look. There is no fault codes - nothing, but the transmission is not working right.

There is no 3-2 shift valve, as such, in the 5HP24.

To initiate the shift, which involves ditching the D-brake and engaging the E-brake while the A-clutch stays engaged, solenoid valve 1 is switched on to direct pressure to stroke shift valve 2 (SV-2) against its spring

At the same time, pressure regulating solenoid 2 which activates the D-brake clutch (KV-D) & holding (HV-D) valves is turned off while pressure regulating solenoid 5 which activates the E-brake clutch (KV-E) & holding (HV-E) valves is turned on

I thought, therefore, that maybe shift valve 2 was what they were describing as the 3-2 shift valve (though it’s also ‘engaged’ in 1st gear too, as well as Park & Neutral)

Jerky rollout shifts aren’t nearly as common with the 5HP24 as they are with the 6HP26 but a couple of guys over on rangerovers.net have also complained about this problem with their 5HP24s and one was in the UK, like me, so I asked him to send me his valve block to check. When I stripped it there was no evidence whatsoever of a problem with the valve block and the SV-2 spring free length was correct at 46.0 mm

Clutch valves KV-D and KV-E both use the same spring as SV-2 so their free lengths should all be 46.0 mm

Holding valves HV-D and HV-E use identical springs to each other with a free length of 43.6 mm

Phil

RRPhil, is this the case for the 6ph26, I think you were talking about the 5ph24, but his car is a 4.8is, which is the 6hp26. Thanks.
