Expensive damage - cheap reason

Hi folks

two days ago I heard a strange noise while driving with my X. It sounded like a tyre having too less pressure or something with the suspension.
But after accelerating it was clear, hot water spreaded the road, the temperature rised into red and power steering was no longer my friend:

A belt had been broken up and the scraps were tied around the visco fan. First diagnosis showed a broken hydro pump, some bursted hydro pressure lines and of course a new belt. A total of 450,-€ is already there because the work to get everything fixed takes a lot of time. And still we do not exactely know if more is harmed like the visco clutch or anything with the hydro circuit...

Shit happens but in this case a 20,- bucks part made everything worse by tying up to a place where it surely does not belong to!

So my advice: Take a look onto the belts (my X has around 100k km)... it may prevent you from such sucking costs and problems!

It very unlikely your belt was the cause of the failure but was instead the result. I would say your waterpump failed, seizing and then that shredded the belt. I do not know what engine you have but I would also replace the idler and tensioner pulleys as these cheap plastic parts can easily be damaged. Alloy billet replacements are also available.

Viscous coupling should be fine but is easy enough to test anyway.

right

Hi X5 girl

Yes, my mechanic told me that your assumption is right. He also thinks that the hydro pump of my 4,4 V8 was the first failing part!

Today all parts will be reassembled and after that we will be able to see if I was lucky and nothing more is harmed.

Drive on!
