Hello...little advice needed
Hello all, great site. Funny story, my 1997 E36 M3 that I picked up 11 years as a CPO popped out of gear at a gas station, rolled 50 yards and T-boned a massive RV while I was inside paying. When I got back, it rolled so far I thought it got stolen. Insurance is talking about totaling it. I absolutely love the car, my commute is 25 miles of very twisty back roads, and the thing has been dirt cheap and paid for since Clinton was in office.
Anyone ever gone from an M3 to an X5? After much searching and reading, how prevalent is the transmission failure issue with these cars as they clock high miles? (my car had 190,000 with nothing major but a clutch at 10,000 miles ago) |

I went from a 1999 328IS Coupe withe the M-Technic package to a 4.4 X5. The wife ended up getting the old car, so I still got to drive it for a few years before trading it in on a 2004 325CI. Do I miss the power and handling of my new car, yes. Would I trade the look and feel of my X5, no

I went from a modded '93 325is (that beat my friends 95 M3 in a race) to the 4.6is, and never looked back! I do miss driving the manual, but love the X5 more for some reason. I sold the car to a friend of mine and got to drive it all the time, but he wrecked it and is too broke to fix it at the time. So now I gotta look at it in a broken state when I go to his house....

I have a '01 4.4 Sport and a '95 540 6 speed. The X5 is a very comfortably tight good handling vehicle. It runs very well and the looks are unbeatable. An awsome SAV no doubt. A great daily driver. But when you want that fuzzy feeling you get when you slam that ///M thru a corner just grabbin gears and smilling ear to ear... well.. go drive an X. You decide. I won't soon sell the 540!!!!

The x5 won't approach the m3 in driving feel and twisties. No way to get around the fact the x is over 4400 lbs

Thanks for the responses, When I bought my //M I was in my twenties, had no wife or kids. Now, 40 this year a wife and 3 kids....it's been a great run, and I have embarrassed many Mustangs, Camaros, jacked up redneck pickups and even the odd vette or two on my "neighborhood" back highway. It seems I am using my wifes Tahoe for more and more running around lately, I'm thinking it is the most logical choice.
