My car's computer says I have to buy a new transmission

Hi guys. I have been a lurker on the site for a while now but never made a post. I’ve got a real head-scratcher and could really use some help if anyone is willing.

My 2002 BMW X5 4.4 with 90k miles is in the shop and am being told I need a new transmission. It is a reputable, BMW specialist and I have no reason not to trust them, just want some other opinions, thoughts, etc.

The transmission stopped working suddenly, all agree it is something electrical/computer in nature. When put in drive, transmission will not engage until accelerated, then it grabs hard but immediately goes in to fail-safe mode. Reverse is fine.

EGS codes are 49 (gear monitoring) and 59 (stall speed monitoring). When you clear the codes, problem immediately repeats itself. My mechanic is fairly certain it is either a problem in the valve body (probably a switch or something electrical) or the torque converter. But due to the mileage on the car and the cost for these individual items vs. the whole thing, says it makes the most sense to replace the entire transmission.

I’m having a hard time getting my arms around shelling out the dough to replace a BMW transmission just because my car’s computer says it doesn’t work! Transmissions don’t work fine one minute and then just stop. There has to be a simpler (and cheaper) fix.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

AC

Check the trans computer, and the ECU. There might be a problem with them. But first disconnect your car battery. Let it sit over night like that. This will reset the computer system in the X. Then re connect it and see if it does continue to give you problems. If so then go to step 2, check the ECU or Trans Computer. Good Luck, and let us know what happens. Just an FYI, I had some weird shifting happen to me a month ago with my X, as I would come to a stop my X would jerk forward then stop. I saw a thread from someone on here disconnected the battery to reset all computers on there X. So I did the samething and to my surprise, my X is shifting 100 times better and drives 100 times better with no jerks or quirks, hahaha. Hope this helps.

If you don't mind me asking, what shop are you using? Just curious.

I'm trying to find the information for the guy that i've ordered parts from when I ruined the splines on the pump gear of my buddies 750iL transmission. In the meantime, you can look around on ebay, www.bavengine.com or www.car-part.com for junkyards that sells used parts.

EDIT:

Kurt Koehler - ZF tranny guru - http://www.autosportsunlimited.com/
Jaggi - Place where I bought replacement parts, super nice guy and very helpful over the phone - www.jie.com

Your best off calling this guy along w/ spending some time on Google and other BMW messageboards. The X5 drivetrain isn't hugely different compared to a 540, 740 and 840...other than obviously being AWD. Don't spend $6000 on a new transmission when you might be able to get away a used transmission for under $1000 including installation.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
With the gear monitoring and stall speed monitoring faults you will end up needing either a new transmission or get it rebuilt by a reputable shop with BMW and ZF experience.

BimmerDude,
Thanks for the suggestion. Battery was disconnected this afternoon, will see what happens in the morning. My mechanic said this was a good fix when the computer modules were not communicating with each other but mine were. Will try anything at this point so thank you!

FSWTH,
I’d rather not post the name of the shop I’m using. I have a long relationship with them and they have always exceeded expectations. In the event they have made a mistake, I would not want to embarrass them.

M5james,
You and I are on the same page. With 90K miles, a rebuild or used trany is the way to go. Thank you!

Killcrap – ditto and thanks!

Thanks, too, Weasel. I’ve read many of your other post trust your opinion. I think I know where this is headed….

Just a quick follow up – can anyone recommend a qualified transmission rebuild shop for my X5 in Atlanta?

I know X5Dawg had his rebuilt in our area while back. You can search for his thread or PM him.

I have been using one particular indy shop for a while now, but I am pretty sure they would sub that out. Even though one of the tech's was a BMW tech at a dealer in the past.
