Learn Basics of Car maintenace

This forum is an eye opener, i get to hear about you Mods who can do every thing on the car by yourself.

I never bothered much about the internal workings or checking the oil, may be in NY you are spoiled with Drive-in oil changes etc.Now I would like to learn the basics of Car Maintenance, ( what to check, Oil, heating etc )Also would like to know the best way to drive the car, as i tend to speed right after a green light and i see the RPM hitting 6..

So is there any place i can go and get some classes, if so what do you recommend
