Is it true that X5 3.0 have more problems than the rest?
Before i purchased my X5 i was told that the 3.0 have more problems and are very weak in comparison to the rest 4.4 4.6 etc? So far i have seen a lots of issues with late models specially wiht the 3.0s Keep them coming guys..

No. I don't think they have any more problems than the others. If there are any problems, they are common to all X5's. They all use the same crappy window regulators, final stage resistors, oxygen sensors, etc. I have not heard of any problems unique to the 3.0 I6 engine. Actually, I think it's quite solid.
Very weak? That's relative. I have the 3.0 and it has been fine for me. I don't tow anything so the 4.4 wasn't necessary. Are there times I'd like a little more power? Of course but don't we all?

Not based on my personal experience, nor anything I've ever read. The 3.0 engine is one of the best engines BMW has ever produced. Virtually every other major component on the vehicle is the same across engine platforms.

i have to say that i dont know if it is a common problem but i was told friday that i am going to need to replace my engine. Apparently burning through a quart of oil in a week is a bad thing. I have owned 3 bmw's including the X and both of the others have gone strong past 200k miles but i need a new engine and i olny have 85k on the X.

Why would you want some sob stories to "keep them coming"? What exactly do you mean by "weak". Just wondering...

Just was wondering as i was told that the 3.0 have more problems thats it.. no other reasons. When i say "keep them coming" i mean keep those posts coming.. About weakness? i was told that the V8 its much better of course more power. . . I have a friend that works at the BMW dealer for 12 years and he said that most of the X problems he has seen are 3.0 engines. Again this is what i was told..

If you have a 3.0, I wouldn't worry. Check your oil regularly and keep it topped up as you would with any vehicle.

I, too, have the 3.0, and I have had no major issues with my car -- at least not problems isolated to the 3.0. The very few (minor) issues I have had are issues that plague the X5 across the board (window regulator, power mirrors suddenly going haywire). I have been very, very pleased with the car, and have no major complaints at all.
As far as power: The 235hp is misleading. On paper, you'd think it is under-powered considering the weight of the vehicle. All I've got to say is: drive one. BMW has done a marvelous job with the gearing, and the car simply is NOT under-powered! Is it as fast as the V8? Of course not! But, very, very rarely have I wished for more power. You'll fall in love with the car, trust me. ![]() Juan
