I have a 2001 4.4i. I believe the OEM coolant was dyed blue (not absolutely sure). I got approval from BMW to change out the OEM coolant with the "orange" Texaco Extended Life Coolant / GM Dexcool (I believe that it and the OEM BMW coolant are the same technology, just different dye). I worked for Texaco when it developed the new technology coolants which use "organic" additives in the ethylene glycol base instead of the "dissolved solids" used in the old technology green antifreeze.

The benefit of the new technology "orange/GM Dexcool" & "blue/BMW OEM" coolants is that they do their job WITHOUT coating the inside of the cooling system with deposits which hamper heat transfer, and their absence of dissolved solids greatly extends the life of the water pump seals because the dissolved solids are abrasive to the seals.

DON’T USE THE GREEN STUFF; OLD TECHNOLOGY, BAD FOR HEAT TRANSFER AND WATER PUMP SEALS.

My coolant is black, like the color of the oil used to make french fries at Burger King.

Hehehe actually I don't know what color it is.

The Texaco Extended Life Coolant has been licensed to other manufacturers, i.e. Shell's Rotella, Prestone, etc. If the antifreeze package has the following on it it will be the organic formulation which is dyed orange: "DEX-COOL; GM APPROVED".

GM was the first auto manufacturer to adopt the new formulation (about 1996) as original fill for ALL of their vehicles, primarily for water pump seal longevity which allowed extended warranty. Additionally, it keeps the coolant system absolutely clean and really doesn't ever need to be changed out, although all manufacturers still recommend doing so (BMW every 4 years). It (or it's licensed equivalent) is now original fill for most vehicles.

Walmart will also have it (i.e. DEX-COOL; GM APPROVED).

I've never had even the slightest deposit on my coolant cap (I just checked again). A white deposite is what the old green coolant would leave (disolved solids). Has someone topped off your coolant with the old green stuff?
