Turn the x5 off and leave it off for, If I remember correctly, 15 minutes. It should then enter a "sleep" mode causing the light to turn off.

It's normal for it to stay on for a short period of time but it'll eventually shut off.

The little light at the shifter stay on and will go into sleep mode ,,,, when you hit the button on the remote it will light up again.
As for the battery is draining you need to look into the final stage registor (FSR) to check that you need to run your AC or heat for little while the turn off the car if you hear the air still running ... If so you need the FSR for sure.

I was worried about another electrical glitch when I spotted that litle lamp on the stick glowing proudly. I wasn't convinced it was normal despite it going out after 15 mins, because I couldn't understand the logic of it being on. Does anyone else know why? What purpose does it serve?

The light stays on for approx. 15 Min. It then checks for a current drain of less than 35 mA. and the computer goes into stand-by.
If it stays on, you have still something consuming power.

some x5's shifter lights continue to illuminate even after the vehicle sends the go to sleep command. dont confuse this as an error.
