Fan stop on me the other day

So yesterday the fan stopped while i was driving. I shut it off and turned it on a couple of times then it started working again. When the fan started it made a little squeeking sound and then ran fine.
I was wondering if any of you have had this and if i should be worried about it? could it be as easy as changing a belt, or is it a bigger problem.
Thanks in advance!

If you're reffering to the cooling radiator fan, even though it is turned by a direct belt/watep pump/shaft, it has a clutch with liquid/oil in it and it sort of works like your thermostat. I will cut in and out based on temperature.
A Squeek could lead to a failure of it though.

....and may I ask, how do you know that the fan stopped working while driving?

Hi,

If the problem copmes from the ventilation fan in the cabine, then i suggest u to chane the following detail.

u can find pics about the part that is dead on your car here.

BMW [6enligne.net] Les Fiches Techniques de 6enligne

The part number is 64116923204 (for a E46).

The post is in french but the diagnostic of the symptoms is the same than yours (and mine also).
If any problem with translation, just contact me, i am French.
