Failed Brake Master Cylinder..wtf?

So two weeks ago our X5 needed a front brake job. So it went to Knauz BMW in lake bluff (chicago). Got the brake job done under extended Maintence warranty and sway bar link was replaced under WarrantyDirect. Fine.

I drove it, and the brake pedal felt mushy. Stayed that way. They need to rebleed probably I thought, no big deal. I called in and made an appointment with the original SA. He said it could be air in line, but emphasized that it could be a leak, ie. master cylinder etc, several times. Seemed wierd, took it in today anyway. Mind you, it was perfectly fine before the brake job in terms of pedal firmness.

Took it in today, the guy calls and says it's the master cylinder . He also says WarrantyDirect covered it. Again wtf. The aftermarket warranties never cover brake components. I don't know how he got them to cover it. It's gonna cost $600+.

I'm glad that we don't have a deductible. The difference between a $100 deductible and $0 deductible was only $300. We're already at the third or fourth job, so we'v easily already covered that extra money spent for not havinga deductible. Between the cam sensors, sway bar link and this job, we've already gotten more than $1000 covered under the warranty with 5.5yr/40k more to go on it.

Bottom line is, I think this dealer is calling "failied" parts out of no where. Also, WarrantyDirect is seeming to be a good purchase more and more (knockin on wood).

Sorry for the long story.

sounds fishy to me too...

gotta ask yourself... is this the type of dealer that breaks customer's equipment and then claims the part failed on its own? hmmm... hate to even suggest it but, its possible the dealer tried to use some type of power brake flusher, blew the seals on the master cylinder and now says its out of spec cuz it can't hold constant pressure... dunno... just saying its a possibility but chances are they didn't do that...

If your story had read that it was MotorWerks in Barrington then I would probably agree with you on this. However, my experience with Knauz was generally on the up and up.

I don't know what they're up to, but previous to today's visit I thought they were outstanding. The SA was extremely curtious, everything on time, etc.

Thank god, WarrantyDirect covered it. btw, $600 seems very high for a master cylinder replacement.

Regarding Motorwerks, we used them a couple of times and they seemed good . Their service department definetly handles a lot higher volume than Knauz.

Is WarrantyDirect offered by BMW?

No sir, aftermarket. They have excellent feedback and are a very large company. We have had great results so far, and I believe MD has a warranty from them as well.

aftermarket warranty.........

good info on this post.......

Kinda makes me wonder how long the after market warranty co's will be keen to offer decent premiums for our beloved, but >50k mile X5s.

(completely self-selecting evidence on X5World seems to be that approx. $1.8k premium for a 2-3yr/24-36000 policy pays off for us X5 owners)

My own experience : 'Continuous Care Gold' has paid for two fuel level sensors ($750 !!!); both camshaft speed sensors; one day of rental car. I have 6 months remaining and am just about at even money.

Yea, I forgot to mention that WarrantyDirect has been covering rentals too, however long the job took.

Thumbs down

Karl Knauz is officially a horrible dealer. Not only did they rip WarrantyDirect off, they're also incompetent. I've known for a while now that the tires are getting low on tread. I mentioned this to my mom. When she was there, she asked the SA about it and he said theres till plenty of tread left. There maybe 2-3mm, probably less. The little stub indicators that are in the bottom of the tread are at the same level or a little higher than the tread now. Those guys are idiots. Sorry about the rant .
