The alternator housing bracket is in the full pressure/full flow part of the oil system and will develop to a much larger leak... thus is the more important of the two leaks. The timing covers is just oil slung from the timing chain thus a much slower leak as you probably have on the rover.

It might not matter quite so much where you are, but in the UK the oil leaking from a Land Rover and spraying over the chassis is normally regarded as a rustproofing system
