Service schedules. FYI

To help anyone doing their own servicing, or to check that your vehicle has been serviced fully to spec, here is a list of tasks required and parts used on the X5 service:

Oil Service (0.35 hrs)

Change oil, oil filter and pollen filter
Visually check discs and pads
Check and adjust handbrake cable and linkage
Check tyres and adjust pressures, retorque wheel bolts
Reset Service Indicator

Inspection 1 (1.2 hrs 3.0i,1.25 hrs 3.0d/4.4/4.6)

As above PLUS
Check seatbelts and catches, ABS warning lamp, download fault codes, check instruments, stitches, horn, heater operation, interior lamps, wiperblades, washers, headlamps, indicators and hazards, steering rack/box, joints and pas hoses, suspension joints, gaiters, springs, dampers, exhaust and mounts, brake pipes and fuel tank/lines, brake hydraulics, battery condition/specific gravity, TOP-UP pas fluid, washer fluid, brake fluid, check/top-up coolant level/strength,

Inspection 2 (1.6 hrs 3.0i, 2.0 hrs 3.0d, 2.1 hrs 4.4/4.6)

As above PLUS
Remove and refit wheels to check brake disc/pad wear
Remove pads, clean , lubricate and refir, check calipers.
Remove rear discs to clean/adjust handbrake shoes.
Replace air filter, spark plugs or diesel fuel filter, petrol fuel filter (every 2nd IN2),

Extended period servicing
Every 2 years.....change brake fluid
Every 4 years.....change coolant

And my personal recommendatios include:
Every 2 years/30k miles...replace serpentine/fanbelts, Regas Air Con, change rad cap.
Every 60k miles....change transmission, diff and transfer box oils. Renew plastic belt tensioners, renew flexi brake pipes
Every 100k miles....replace viscous coupling on radiator fan

Done in the sequence:

Oil Service, IN1, Oil serice, IN2, Oil Service, IN1, Oil Service, IN2, etc etc, or go by your service history book. If you are starting from scratch and have no history, start with an IN2.

To supplement this list, take a look at the BMW document for the content of each inspection, posted above in the Online References. Here is the direct link:

when are my lights supposed to be reset? I've had an oil change and BMWs "30 point" inspection. Not sure if that counts as inspection 1. I thought it was reset at oil change? I thought they did a fluid top up too. How do i go about this?

Lights should be reset at ALL service intervals and that 30 point inspection is a way for the dealer to find themselves some work on your car and earn money. They will NOT have done ANY IN1 work at this time. The check will most likely have just been a visual check on tyres, fluid levels, horn, brakes and lights.
