Thank you very much for the input !

Cleaning the throttle body looks pretty easy. I have not noticed any cracks in the hoses but I'll check and report back. That would be an easy fix vs replacing the throttle body !

Dave.

And at the end of the day I might be very wrong, and it could be your throttle body.

Thankfully drilling down potential problems sometimes offers you a chance to do a little more for your peace of mind later on. Before you take that intake hose off the TB, order that hose if you haven't replaced it. I'll post a picture of mine sometime and you'll see why!

Other things to consider are your air filter, and using maf cleaner on your maf (specific chemical not brake cleaner!). I was thrilled with the in town mileage achieved after doing these! Won't tell you how bad my air filter was though... :O

the air filter was probably as bad as mine ! That I know, just never suspected that these things could produce that code.

I've got some cleaning to do !

ps -- the car has 260,000 miles on it and I am wary of spending money unnecessarily. That said, I'll do much to keep it on the road myself but dealer charges would quickly dwarf the existing value of the car.

I checked the boots and nothing seems cracked or split. It does look like it's a bear getting at the throttle body though ! I'll have to look for DIY's for that part; cleaning seems easy in comparison.

I opened another thread, hoping that someone would point me to a DIY but no luck so far. I haven't found anything that would help me get to the throttle body.

Well, yesterday I replaced the two pre-cat O2 sensors (I was getting a consistent code on one), changed the thermostat (was leaking a little) and water pump (pm) and put in a new air filter and cabin filter. The first couple of engine starts after that and the 76 sensor code DIDN'T SHOW UP ! It never failed to come on before !

Today is a new day. I've got some errands to run ... will the code show up again ? Perhaps the new filter allows the engine to "breathe easier" and it's not sucking air in from some miniscule crack after the MAF ?

Fingers crossed ...

Dave.

A day of multiple errands and the code is no more ! Amazing. Before it showed up within 2-3 seconds of every engine start.

I guess that the air filter really does something ... .

No, it was a combination of everything. If your o2 was shot, I believe we default to rich, so too much air, which pisses off other stuff. The thermostat also is a clear fix. Your gas mileage was probably pretty terrible no?

The code didn't disappear with the replacement of the pre-cat O2 although it wasn't as consistent.

I had some leakage from the thermostat seal with the engine body and decided to replace it and the water pump at the same time. It wasn't leaking much coolant -- perhaps a cup every 2 months -- I don't think that the thermostat was related.

Gas mileage was down a little, I think. It will be interesting to see how it changes with a long trip that we're doing next week.
