New-B looking at CPO 2006 or a 5 series

Hi,
New to forum. Outstanding resource here! I'm quite torn at the moment. I'm between getting a used 2006 X5 vs a 2007 530i. I have driven both and absolutely love both cars. I wish I could afford to get both. I have been looking at 2006 X5s with under 30K mileage and have been looking to get the price to under 30K out the door if possible. I have been trying to go the CPO route and see most are priced at around 32-33K with similar mileage and not many options. How much haggle room is there typically? I want to try to get the price to around 28-29 and hopefully that is doable.

Finally..over the long time..persuade me to get an x5. I love the look and the versatility, but at the same time the 5 series is a sharp car and one year newer. I want as reliable of a vehicle is possible, so I really don't know which route to go. All opinions and help appreciated.

Are you looking at a 3.0 or 4.4 X? I was originally between a 5er and X5 as well. The 6 cyl is generally considered bulletproof. From a mere cost/mx perspective the 530 would probably be the more prudent choice. It is a year newer, so one extra year of original warranty. I can't guarantee that particular 5 is going to be more reliable than that particular X5, but the odds are for it. I drove a '93 525i (I know, completely different car) for many years and loved it. I really thought I would buy a 530i, but the first time I drove a 4.4 X5 I decided that would be my next vehicle (at least until I drove the 4.8is). Never drove a 3.0 X5 until I got an e70 loaner from the dealer. As for the price from what I've seen people saying sub-30 should be doable, even with good options.
I cannot persuade you to buy the X, only leave by saying I absolutely love my '05 so I feel I made the right choice.

They are both good vehicles. If you need to tow a trailer, an X5 is the logical choice. If you want better handling, faster acceleration, and improved fuel economy, go for the 5 series. If none of the above are critical deciders, just go with the emotional choice, whichever one it may be.

I really enjoyed my 2003 X5 3.0, but sold it just past 4 years since I didn't want to own it without an extended warranty. The E70 design headed off the wrong way for me (larger, heavier), so that wasn't an option. I like having an SUV around, so we got an X3. Both my wife and I like driving it, due to the agile handling and manual transmission. I enjoy my 535 more than the X5, for the handling, power, etc (see above), but I never regretted buying the X5.

Got that deal back in december, look around and you'll find one. Got 8K taken off the "internet price" our stealer wanted too with a little help from an iphone and "hey, that guy on xoutpost got offered $10k NOT to turn the same car in!"

YMMV, but good luck

good stuff so far. I was looking at the 3.0L 6 for the X5. I think it would be more reliable in the long run vs the v8. Gas mileage appears to be a wash however.

I live in NJ so I think the x5 would be very nice in the winter. I don't think I would drive the 5er much with the snow..and no, Im not looking at the xi version of that car. Arghh..i'm torn ha.

Go for a x5 4.4 and you'll be happy. Be assertive with your 30k and see what the dealer does. Goodluck

Well put. The best question for your decision is, "what are your needs with this vehicle?"
Example: I wanted another BMW as that is pretty much all I've driven for the last 10 years. Additionally, we felt we needed something larger for Home Depot runs, etc and my wife had recently traded in her work Ford Escape for a Volvo S40. Being the handling snob that I've become, I was pretty opposed to the idea of driving a truck. Although it does not drive as tight as a 3er or 5er would, I felt that it was a near perfect compromise between handling and utility. If I could justify buying and insuring a car and a truck, I would probably buy a 5 and an old Ford. Of course in a dream world where I could buy a non-xi sport wagon, that would have been a tougher decision.
On the snow issue, from what I've read, a non-xi with a winter setup works just fine.
