I have my V1 mounted in that same location (without using a remote display) for over 5 years now and it's barely noticeable for the passerby. I don't even get a look by cops, which means it's already pretty stealthy even with the display turned on.
Huh? Clearly visible to who? If a cop sticks his head inside my window, yes it's visible. He won't know that I used it though because it would be turned off before he did that.
I can tell you that, after much experimentation, it's much better down by the ashtray. No cops or other drivers behind me can EVER see my V1 while I'm in motion (day or night). Above the mirror is not exactly in one's line of sight either.
My first choice would be to have the remote built into the heads-up display; second choice would be somewhere on the dashboard. But this is a decent compromise.

I decided to move my remote again. I'm liking the spot on the left dash (which SeattleTopaz) is using. It may be able to be in my peripheral vision all the time now. In CT, we have to have this registration sticker in the bottom left corner of the windshield so it's kinda appropriate that my remote is mostly hidden by that

My remote has been "slimmed" down and I have had colors added to strengths and to the bands. Here's two pictures (the second is not a good one but I'll take a better one in the daylight):

I got my slimmed down and colored concealed display a while back. I don't think that guy is making them any more. I don't think there anything wrong with buying one from eBay -- it's not touching your V1 -- it's just modding the concealed display. The ones on eBay do not appear to have the "slim" option. They are not "knockoffs" if by that you mean non-Valentine One products. The warranty is voided though.

I think having the colored bands are really useful. Having the strength bar colored is just a nice to have.

EDIT: This guy over on RadarDetector.net appears to be doing good work on adding color to the concealed displays (and to the V1 itself). Has lots of good pictures too.
