X5 Newbie here...

I just purchased a 2003 X5. It is a 5 speed with almost all the bells and whistles. Has 87K. I have owned one other BMW and it was a 98 M3. So far it is an absolutely fantastic vehicle. I am just wondering what some of the things I should be aware of or look out for might be.

I am also wondering if there are any X5 gatherings in the Northern VA area. I have always enjoyed getting together with others at some of the local car gatherings and don't really see alot of X5's at them.

Thanks in advance for any input...

If 5 speed = stick, then the clutch should be good until 120K

Simon has the Transmission phobia after the hard time it's giving him

mrbmwx5, your post is such a boost for the moral of 3.0 owners

oh, and don't forget the CV boots, the outer fronts, especially the driver side...

Get the oil seperator serviced before winter. water from condensation collects in the hose and freezes.

Last year that hose froze up and cost $1300 worth of damage.

I second that, especially since you're in a cold climate. Just look for the telltale signs of cheese whiz under your oil cap when the temps start to drop, that's usually a good indicator of things gunking up.

Other than that, the torn front CV boots seem to plague every X5 so inspect those for sure. With winter coming, just carry a small tool kit, garbage bag, and duct tape (in case one of the crap window regulators decides to pop during a rainstorm)
