X5 picutres do not show License Plate Numbers?

I always wondered why the license plate numbers are blocked out on X5 pictures in these forums. Is this to keep the identity of the poster private or something else?

I have always done this since I had a visit from the serious fraud squad during ownership of my first X5 in 2001.

There was a duplicate combo car with my private plate on, which had been impounded on a boat on it's way to Dubai

They checked out my vehicle with all the identification #s which are hidden in the car with BMW's database.

It freaked me out, you don't know what criminal gangs get up to these days.

I do it just for privacy, it's an expensive item and you never know who is lurking and covets your car.

I've never understood the plate disquise thing...we drive around all day with our plates hanging out for anyone to "see". A "curious party" can jot it down, do some digging and come up with your shorts' size in about 20 mins.

Having had my Complete Fooking ID compromised, and doing some digging and investigating after the fact, even I as a neophyte non-tech, can find out a lot about anyone I'm curious about. If I were a very savvy hack/techie, the sky is the limit, imo.

But, if it makes one feel better by "smudging" their plate, go for it.

The difference is that millions of people can see it on the internet from anywhere... driving around your locale the numbers are less and the % of potential bad guys is less. it's all a numbers thing.

I think it's for the same reason that people are sometimes averse to posting their picture. You'll see, though, that I've never been shy about posting my license plate. And my mug shot is in more than one of the pics posted from last weekend's X5world meet.
