Oil leak update
I put in 7 qts of new Mobile W0-40 engine oil but after the leak, there appears to be zero oil remaining. I checked with my dipstick and get a 'below' minimum reading. Also, I get a "check engine oil level" message. I followed the oil change instructions posted on this site (except for using a manual wrench, not torque wrench) but the 7 qts of oil appears to have disappeared/leaked!

I wouldn't think that "zero oil" is left, unless all 7 qts leaked out...and, 7 qts
is a lot of oil, "puddle-wise". You may have lost 2ish or more qts, or less. That below the lower notch reading is ~ a qt+ to 2 qts. Hard to know; it isn't my stick. I would crawl under and make certain your drain plug is snug/tight and maybe wipe the drain plug area, and look for leaks/drips, with a flashlight. Don't overtighten/lean on that drain plug...if you cross threaded it, it will only exacerbate that situ. If the plug is secure, it leaked from some other location. I understand your frustration, but go slow and easy and see what you discover underneath. You might also take a roll of paper towels and wipe up on the engine pan cover; you may discover a lot of old drain oil and/or new oil there. It is not a handy design, cover-wise. Be careful and slow, under there. GL,mD |

Do you have much experience changing oil yourself in other vehicles, or is this the first time?

No more leak!
Being this my first oil change, I forgot to tightend the oil filter cap "100%" (I though I did..but I guess I learned the lesson the hard way). I poured in a total of 9.5 qts, meaning almost 2 qts were wasted by my mistake! Since I have my first oil change under my belt, I will look for other basic porjects for my x5. Thanks for everyone's help.

These things happen to everyone. Glad you caught it before a long road trip! That's why we check for leaks first.
