Looking to buy an e53 X5...any tips?

Just starting my search on the X5's. Any years or models to avoid - or any other tips for my search? Any advice is appreciated.

I am most familiar with the 3 Series BMW's - as an example the e46 M3's had rod bearing issues in the 2002's which led to engine failure from poor lubrication. So stay away from the 2002 M3

Try to get facelift E53. If you have driven E46 M3 than you may like 4.8is. And stay away from 2004 4.8is....First year bugs although gone by now, but it has seen more dealer days.

first year bugs on 4.8is? there was a recall to replace the engines on the early ones. early ones didnt have panoramic sunroofs which is a plus. i would def get an early 4.8is, ones with close to 60K on any of them will need to replace the front air shocks. and probably the cv axle outter boots, if you live in cold climate, than expect the intermidate levers and shafts on v8's produced from 9/03 to 9/06 to need replacement. other than that, a solid vehicle.

how many 2002 m3's did you see that had engine failure? i see more 04-06's that needed engines because the vanos gear broke. dont shun the early builds they are great cars, bugs that have been addressed while under warranty.

I understand from my SA that there are two hoses inside the oil pan that have a tendency to fail at high mileage. I also asked him about the pano roofs. He stated he's replaced a few broken ones but other than that, no issues. I would definitely stay away from the 4.6is. Too many door lock actuator issues and they do like the petrol.

BTW, it would seem the 04-06 4.8 gets better gas mileage than the new 4.8's. I average 20.1 on the highway and 14 in the city.

I also owned THREE e46 M3C's and traded my 05 M3C for my current CPO'd 06 4.8is and I'm lovin it! Just installed full CF roundels on the bonnet and the back. Great quality from Asia. Cost me $35 for the pair and a perfect fit! I also have four CF roundels inbound for the wheels to match.

All model years suffer from failures of door lock actuators and carriers. If you want a fun car to drive get the 4.6is but opt for the 4.8is for the facelift
