Remember, I was first with this idea!

Seems someone did the research to find that Alpina designed the 4.6 and 4.8 engines and then BMW built the engines from their designs.

So... I'm looking for a 68mm Alpina emblem to fit on the front of the engine cover where the standard roundel now resides. Then... I intend to have the engine cover painted RED. I figure this ought to add some pizzazz. I'll post pics when eventually done.

Yes. Like that. But I read the article. And, we know if it's written down, it HAS to be true. Right?

I'll look for the article later.

Sounds good, you can get a whole bunch of Alpina emblems off ebay, are you painting it yourself? (doing all the sanding, priming etc.)

But if I were you I would leave the BMW logo and simply add something like this : http://www.bmwz4roadster.net/Engines/Z4Alpina3000cc.jpg

I actually am planning on painting it myself. I'll try a sall sample area and based on the results either do it myself or outsource it. As far as the Alpina emblem, I can't find an emblem that is right at 68mm. However I did find a sticker that is an overlay that's 65mm (that's the 'inside' measurement of the emblem itself).

I haven't decided on color yet. I first thought of RED, but the bright silver is very striking. So, I'm hedging right now. I won't do anything until I get the sticker in.

Additionally this information was provided from another BMW board:
Quote:
The Alpine 4.6l V8 engine is Alpinas own design and porting/polishing/assembling is being done by hand at the Alpina factory in Buchloe.
The BMW engine is identical (i.e. Alpinas design) apart from it being assembled at BMW and the fact that BMW doesn't port and polish the heads, balance the combustion chambers or the crankshaft.
So the BMW engine actually has lower power output and worse efficiency than the Alpina engine. Even though the specs are identical. Shorther lifespan of the crankshaft bearings are also to be expected for the BMW engine.
But these differences are the usual differences between craftmanship and mass produced goods.
To me, since there was no official release of an Alpina E53, this is very much like putting ///M3 badges all over a 318i. Having Alpina "touch" the engine, doesn't make the X5 an Alpina X5.

But it's your car and your choice!

save your money for other mods besides a mere false advertisement that only generates laughs at your expense. dont mean to be cruel but what your thinking about doing is just that. save up for the motors supercharger and keep it a sleeper. My advice could be crap, so if you go with the original plan I would add chrome accents throughout the x. Sorry dude i had to vent irresponsibly on this one

false advertisement? the alpina badge DOES belong on this vehicle. Someone who laughs at that is just not in the know. Flared wheel arches, 20" wheels, tacho cluster, different engine and trans, bigger brakes, front and rear aprons. Look at a 330 vs m3, whats different? the same things are changed. But if it were really an alpina, the interior leather would not be just NAPPA, it would be NAPPA, and some green/blue/red stitching and different steering wheel.

I wonder what's the source of Killcrap's info. There is no "Alpina X5". Only Alpina contribution is that they gave the blue prints of engine design to BMW for mass production.

FA93 in VIN is USA body code for all X5 4.8is.
FA91 & FA92 is body code for Europe bound X5 4.58is

- Peogueot deserves a Mini badge since it shares they same engine?!
- Toureang deserves a Porche badge since it shares the same platform?!
- SaangYang deserves a Merc badge since it uses the Merc's engine?!
