Different Versions of Premium Audio?

Hi -

Just traded by 2002 4.4 on a 2006 4.4... however, the audio quality in my 02 seemed much better. Both have DSP (the 02 didn't have NAV), and both spec sheets pulled at the dealer have Premium HiFi listed as options

Notably, the bass and midrange was tighter on the 2002.

In speaking with the dealer, he said there is actually an audio option BEYOND Premium Hi-Fi that added more concealed door speakers, rear speakers amplifier output, and subs. He believes that my 2002 indeed had the Premium-PREMIUM Audio (even thought its not on the spec sheet), and not just the Premium Hi-Fi.

Am I making any sense?

My 2006 indeed has the 2 sub speakers behind the passenger trunk panel.

GOAL: to determine if there is indeed a more premium audio option. If not, I will assume that something is wrong with my current system.

no such thing, unless hes talking about the Individual system only avail on euro cars as option. all the speakers are the same DSP wise from 1999-2006, just the preout on the CD53 player on your 2002 MID equipped is different than the preout on the BM53 radio on the Nav Equipped

I felt the same way going from my 01 4.4i to my 06 4.8is ... the 01 felt like it had tighter bass response, while the 06 sounds "muffled" .. I have a feeling it has something to do with the insulation they use back by the subwoofer, since the PDC beep isn't half as loud in the 06, either

Thanks for confirming I'm not the only crazy one out there

If it were nominal, I'd let it slide... but the difference is rather profound. Looks like I'll be considering an upgrade.

In my research, I read >40 posts and found people to be very polar; there were those who loved DSP and those who despised DSP.

I have to wonder now if those who loved it had a system similar to my 02. To put things in perspective, my 06 sounds worse than the non-premium audio I had in my 06 e90, whereas my 02 sounded better than the Logic7 audio in my 07 e92!

Baffled.

now I know I'm not the only crazy one out there too

I actually preferred the system in my 01 more so than the one in my 08 E66, but the DSP in the 06 really blows chunks ....
