spray antifreeze coolant on the door lock mechanism on the side of the door jam. one member said it solves the problem. I just take the x off the road for the winter and keep the reliable ones on the road

This has been discussed before.

http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...k-problem.html

Personally, i have the same issue but did not bother me enough to do anything. I simply get a cup of hot/boiling water and pour it onto my lock. Let it melt the ice on the handles while I'm shoveling snow of the X. By the time I'm done, the door handles are usually fine.

This is correct. Or get a new door handle carrier at the dealer. 550 bucks including labor.

I bought a set on ebay for about $70. It took about 1.5-2 hours for the drivers side, but I'm sure I could replace one much faster now.

The best way to prevent the frozen door locks is preventive maintenance: Pull the door handle out (like you're opening up the door) and spray inside the exposed holes with a good quality silicone lubricant spray. I've had good luck with this method, some folks use a dilute glycol or antifreeze that they squirt in there.

I spray inside my door handle mechanism once every couple weeks during the winter, and since I've been doing that I've never had an issue.

It's a bunch of crap for a $55K vehicle, but that's the way it goes I guess.

I read somewhere it is the bowden cables, i think there was even a bmw bulletin about it.

Try that route, if I remember it was something about the rubber seal at the end of the cable.
