That's tough to answer you should try and do it as soon as possible once you notice it to prevent any debris getting inside and tearing up the joint. That being said it depends on your driving style if you only drive it to the market around the corner a couple of times a week you have a better chance of being ok waiting a bit on the repair. It does also of course depend on the nature of the boot failure it's best if you lift the X and take a look down under at how bad it really is.

My tear looks like the one in your write-up. It's kind of hard to miss the grease inside of a style 87 wheel so I knew the boot probably was torn

I'm having it replaced this Friday.
