CV boot writeup
I am not calling this a DIY because I always use the DIY on this site for my CV boots. This is simply most of the steps of how I did that DIY. I couldn't get all the pictures I wanted to because I needed to finish the job before the day was over. My thanks to all the contributors of that DIY I think it's excellent. -stephX5 |

Where did you buy the puller from? With a regular puller I damaged the dust shield.
Great writeup btw. Even better than the one in DYI section

Did not use a hub puller or Air hammer
I was a little worried about the part where the axle is pushed away from the hub. Some use Claws, some use the one that attaches to lugs ( hard to find at local parts store) some use air hammer to punch it out.
I got a normal hub puller that every auto parts store has (no claw). It won't fit because the lugs will not line up and the width in not big enough. So I used the long bolt that comes with the kit and a rubber hammer to tap the axle out of the knuckle. I used penetrating oil ( I am sure wd40 would work too) and let it sit for a little while. Then I place the long bolt that is used in the hub puller kit on the axle (it fits perfect since the axle has an indent). I pretty much use very small blows on the bolt end to punch out the axle pretty easy. So no need to worry too much about the axle coming out with a lot of force. Thanks for the guide! Your mention on how easy the force was to push the axle out with the lug hub puller gave me the idea.

Pushing axle back into knuckle without hammer
Just a couple of notes on my repair.
I did not have to use a hammer and block of wood to put the knuckle and axle back together. I just line the axle up straight (like driving straight ahead) and pushed the knuckle into the axle. The axle will give like a shock but will bottom out. I did not force anything, just kind of pushed the knuckle against the axle a few times (bottomed out like shock). I did spray some penetrating oil on the spline first. (Super Lube) I am guessing you could do the same thing if you somehow brace the axle with a clamp or something. That way you don't bottom out the axle. I also did not remove the strut bolts. I just pushed the knuckle aside (still attached to strut) when I worked on the axle and cv boot Thanks again for the write up. My camera would be full of grease if I tried to take pictures.
