got rear ended now the truck won't start w/pics

got rear ended now the my X5 won't start my mechanic can't charge the battery and nothing works.
any clues? I know the wire harness around the back could be it. The active restraint system on the driver side kicked in (seat belt electric motor) then start a fire between the seat and the center.

any ideas? I am see their claims adjuster tomorrow morning at the shop. I want to make sure they cover everything. since it is only worth $10k I hope they total it.
-the exhaust is bent on both sides.
-bumper
-tailgate
-seat belt (pull out seat)
-wiring
-and it won't start the mechanic has not clue.

I feel you man, I had the exact same thing happen to me, got rear ended by someone not paying attention. Ironically I was hit in the same spot, I don't think that they will total it. Not enough structural damage and the X5 is built like a tank (crumpled hood vs BMW bumper)

If the wire harness is damaged I will request a new harness as to not have hidden problems later.

if you don't mind me asking what was to assessed damage? did you have a fire also? did all your electronics stop working?

ROTFLMAO at that dudes TrailBlazer!!! His car go ruined, yours doesn't look any worse than some soccer mom's minivan that had a parking pole jump out in her way. If they total it, that'd be a great find in the recycling yards. Those are such easy fixes, it's not even funny. Hell, buy it from the insurance, get a new seat, hatch and bumper from your local junkyards, upgrade to some aftermarket mufflers and you're good to go. It looks like an 01, so I assume it's paid off?

So sorry about your mishap, my guess would be the wiring harness like you said...I'm glad you are ok, that's all that matters. I hope everything works out well

Weasel will become famous soon enough
As you know, it deployed certain aspects of the airbag systems. It deployed the seatbelt pretensioners to hold you in place. (as you see and took pics of)

The next part is your problem... the BST. Battery Safety Terminal. There is actually a pyrotechnic charge in the positive battery terminal that blows the terminal apart in a wreck to disconnect the power from most things. You need to buy a new positive terminal. It is only a foot or two long and is an easy bolt on replacement. Just need to get the airbag light cleared after that and the seatbelt pretensioners are replaced.

Looks like you made out easy, just the aforementioned airbag system parts, bumper cover and mounts/shocks and exhaust looks bent, did you by chance need an excuse to get some exhaust work done?

If I were in your place I'd get the estimate done and get the check cut by the insurance and do the work myself. But it may be worth it to just have the work done while driving a rental car. (there is no better way to re-appreciate the X5 than to drive a rental for a few days)

Whatever the check is I plan on taking care of it myself. I will just have the shop make it mobile. The rest is easy.
I just want to make sure that all aspects are looked at before I accept the settled amount.

if its year 2000 with 100k its a total......

main reason is the wire harness / the tap you got might look like nothing but at a real autobody you have to pay a good 2500-3000..

If you were rear ended and your indy can't figure it out, bring it to a stealer. You're not paying for it and, hopefully, the dealer knows what he's doing. If you want it totalled, TAKE IT TO THE DEALER! Their prices are usually high enough they will at least come close! Good Luck, I hope it all works out well for you.

I agree - if your mechanic couldn't figure out why it would not crank, then I would NOT have him work on the vehicle.

As Weasel said, this is a safety shutoff - I have been rear-ended twice to where this was activated in both cases.
