Rear Hatch rattle solution?

Was doing a little pre-winter touch up. Bosch wipers all around. WAY easy. Pinch and slide. 24 driver's, 22 pass, 18 rear.

We had a few really cold days last week. Subsequently, the liftgate was not staying up due to the cold. I had also noticed that it wasn't rattling but seemed loose and out of adjustment. Went to the Pelican Parts website and found the shocks for 21.00 each and bought them.

I was ready to adjust the stoppers and lubricate the seals but decided to replace the shocks first. Problem solved. It now takes an effort to close the liftgate (like new) and when shut, no more loose feel.

My indy was telling me he bought the shocks after getting annoyed with the felt pads wearing out after a month or so...forgot to follow up with him to see if it solved the problem but glad to hear it worked for you.

Can you provide a part #?

That's the bumper thing.

What actually makes sense as to why the liftgate is tighter now is these are shock absorbers as much as lift assists. Car felt to be on the verge of the rattles, and now sounds and feels tight.

Just thought it was a new train of thought. Quite a few people had metioned the bumpers but noone ever mentioned these. Could be a solution.?! Seems to have worked for me.

I mentioned this in another post.
two part numbers - one for each side.
51-24-7-171-558 and 51-24-7-171-557
i have 02 x5. the original part was solid base with adjustable rubber bumpers
loosen the torx screw, rotate the rubber on it's thread and then tighten the torx back up.
this only lasted for a month.

the new part is a single shock assembly with rubber pumper .
unlike older part off of my 02 x5, has no adjustment.

I took a T20 and losened the screw inside the rubber stoppers, then twisted them outwards to make the hatch close tighter against then and it solved my rattle.

I am also inclined to think that my tailgate rattle is in fact shocks related!
Tryed the tips here and still rattles..

Based on the advice of folks on this board, I tried the easy fix for the hatch rattle: I used the little 3/4 inch felt adhesive discs, like that kind you put on the bottom of chair legs to keep them from scratching the floor. I put one on each rubber "bumper" where the hatch contacts the body. Presto, no more hatch rattle.

And a whole pack of 10 or 12 felt discs only costs $3.00. Simple, quick fix. The discs eventually get compressed, so I replace them a couple times a year.

BTW: before trying the felt discs, I tried loosening the T-20 screw and adjusting the rubber bumpers to no avail. It may have helped a little, but it still rattled. The felt discs stopped the rattle immediately. I also lubed the rubber gasket around the hatch with silicone spray.

Oh...and as a last thought: a $55,000 vehicle that rattles just sucks. I've spent more time chasing down squeaks and rattles in this car than any car I've owned. My wife's 04 Toyota 4Runner is silent as a tomb, as is my 2000 Yukon with 180,000 miles. Love the way the X5 drives. Hate the squeaks and rattles.

Yes...this is the part i was thinking about. Aside from realchef's repair, the new/upgraded shock assembly stoppers have been the most consistent fix i've heard about.
