Heat exchanger leaking after water pump replacement
Anyone replaced this before? I just wonder about oil inlet/oulet hose(item 1 & 2), do you need special tools to unhook them from the exchanger? I wonder if I wiggled the thermostat housing a little too much. here is the picture (item 11) |

Are you leaking antifreeze?
If you are leaking anti freeze, it might be the thermostat.(not water pump thermo)
RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 4.4i RADIATOR/EXPANSION TANK/FRAME part 15 Not sure your specs though. Mine starting leaking after rad replacement, and then stopped after a few weeks.

Yes anti-freeze leaks, very slow about one drop every 15/20 sec.
This is not the rediator, it's behind it on the passenger side. Some people had the leak so bad it actuallu mix the auto-trans fluid with coolant (not good). My concern is getting the oil lines of the core (in my picture). I'll check how much the indy/dealer change to replace it I guess. Thanks. |

I think part 15 is leaking.
It drips down the line and collects at part 11 (oil cooling pipe).
At least on my truck, that was the problem. Here is a good look at the part. Image Gallery(ES:37560): Thermostat Mine was leaking around the metal clip. I guess the seal was made lose when I was replacing the big radiator. Mine was leaking exactly like yours. I don't think the oil cooling pipe inlet is the problem, but I really can't tell since I am not there. I ordered the part to replace it, but it stopped leaking on its own. I guess the seal formed back somehow. Good luck

Luke,
mine is for sure the heat exchanger itself is leaking. I see no coolant in the connectors or hose. My concern is taking the oil inlet/oulet from the heat exchanger in the process of replacing the exchanger. Not sure if special tool is required, hope Weasel can chime in, right now I can drive my car but if I mess with the oil lines and it leaks than I am screwed (I'll be loosing auto trans oil). |

heater exchange
ok.
If your heater exchange it cracked, that will do it. I wrapped a paper towel around the thermostat (part 15)and ran the truck for a little. No drips. The then took off the paper towel and is was wet with antifreeze, then the drip started on the heater exchange again. Hope you get it sorted out.
