A clicking sound indicates either flat battery, a bad connection on the battery, or a starter motor. All are possible after sitting for an extended period. You need a proper diagnosis. Do the headlights come on? If you have them on and try to start it, do they go dim?

I've had a similar issue on a number of '01 740i's. I'll have to check out the paper work. Sometimes a fresh battery cures it, but often it's something in the starter or starter relay. Clicks just like the battery is nearly dead, but it's not the battery.
I'm sure that was absolutely no help to you at all... It does seem to be a common problem, at least on the 740's. Occasionally, repeated attempts with a known fresh battery will get you going. Just keep clicking away and eventually, it just starts up. I know that's not fixing anything, but it may prevent you from being stranded. Gar |

If you want to get really, really primitive, you can get underneath the car and tap the starter housing with a hammer. Lightly, or with a brass or plastic hammer. No, I am not kidding. I have had success with other vehicles that had stick solenoids and starter motors. I'm not saying it will actually fix anything, but sometimes if it gets working again, it stays working. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, BMW USA, SAE, or the United States Government. It just might work, and when I'm staring at a dead car, I feel an overwhelming need to try about anything.
Don't forget to TALK to the damn thing either. Some cars like that. Be nice though. Gar |

Isn't this the 3rd post of the same subject, from the same person?

I think it's still the second thread. Still one too many. We'll have to do a sarcasm jihad if he puts up a third thread.
