Rear main seal question - 3.0L 5-speed manual
Has anyone replaced this seal themselves? If so, how many hours should it take and is there enough room to drop/remove the tranmission if the vehicle is up on ramps and/or jackstands? Anything I need to watch out for? Has anyone seen a write up anywhere (came up dry after searching for a couple of hours)?
I have experience doing this type of work on FWD vehicles but just trying to gauge what I might be in for with the X5. TIA. Christian |

I have no experience doing this repair on an X5 (I have done it on other vehicles). Just a comment that it isn't a common failure. Haven't heard of another one failing. There are a few very common potential oil leaks up above, and it can run down and appear to be coming from the rear seal. Recommend you take a good look and make sure that it is in fact the rear seal, and not a breather line or the back of the valve cover gasket.

it will be easier on this car than a FWD. your first time will take about 9 hours on ramps. get it done in about 3 hours if your experienced with a hoist.

I've dropped and replaced a trans in 740/750's within 5hrs in my home garage. It's not that hard, but it's by no means fun either.

Awesome, I really appreciate the feedback everyone!
Vehicle has 127K miles/204K km on it and we had the oil separator issue a while back so I'm wondering if an over pressurization may have helped caused a premature failure. Definitely no leaks from above. |
