I had this problem too. It is related to the spiral behind the wheel in the column. The noise was really bad when I was in the bay area, but when I went back to desert, the noise went away. It seemed to increase with the extra moisture.

Here is an update to my last post:
After driving around town today I have decided that my steering wheel noise is NO better then it was before the Lubrizol treatment. The strange thing is that it was definitely better the day I picked it up from the dealer but now it is making the same noise again. It has rained hard here for the past few days and during that time I did not drive the X, maybe it does have something to do with the humidity. Anyhow it definitely sounds like something is rubbing in the steering column. When I get back from holiday travel I will take it back to the dealer and press them to take apart the steering column. That's my plan, what do you guys think? |

Absolutely and fast... These things don't make noise normally. Something is rubbing. Unfortunately being that mine is out of warranty I have to wait till it warms up to hunt down the squeal. I seem to remember on my old 2002 4.4 X5 the same problem was a seal on the inside of the car but I can't find the warranty ticket. My current 2002 4.6 X5 has the same problem but waited till it was out on warranty.
Let us know what they replace please |

UPDATE:
Back to the dealer for steering wheel noise not resolved with Lubrizol treatment.
As per invoice; "Found the outer steering column shaft bearing and rubber boot were making the noise. The Lubrication did not alleviate the noise. Replaced the boot and bearing and rechecked. Noise was eliminated." They replaced parts; 32-30-6-756-673 CUP (img #6) 32-31-6-759-546 PLASTIC RING (img #3) [ATTACH]39098[/ATTACH Sidenote: had wood trim piece w/ stress fracture replaced under warranty had exterior pillar trim ,replaced (due to dent) for $112 |
