I posted a DIY on the X-drive fluid earlier this year. I never cleared the VTG values and 8 months and 10,000 miles later there are zero differences in drivability and zero issues with the transfer case.

I have 2006 BMW 4.4, I understand that the differential fluid for front and rear must be Castro SAF-XJ 75W-140 for limited slip differentials. Based upon my research and reading, XJ fluid is formulated diffrent than Mobil1. Some folks mentioned that we can use
GT-R GTR R35 NISSAN OEM DIFFERENTIAL FLUID SINGLE CAN Castrol SAF-XJ is recommended for the following applications: · BMW car rear axles equipped with limited slip differentials. · Light commercial vehicles and four wheel drive axles fitted with limited slip differentials I found it in Amazon. it's listed $40/lit. Would it be the same as listed under BMW Differential oil XJ 55 liters 83221470080 ? any input on this. It's hard to find SAF-XJ Thanks Differential oilXJ55 liters83221470080 |

I changed my diff fluid around 80k and I have to say both front and rear were in excellent shape. I was very surprised and based on the condition of my fluid would agree that it can go 100k in the X5. However, I would change it at 100k regardless.
The SAF-XJ is really just Syntec 75W-140 and the SAF-XO is just Syntec 75W-90. I wouldn't be concerned with finding the "European" stuff. You can bet BMW dealers are running Syntec. |
