I have 2006 BMW 4.4, I understand that the differential fluid for front and rear must be Castro SAF-XJ 75W-140 for limited slip differentials. Based upon my research and reading, XJ fluid is formulated diffrent than Mobil1. Some folks mentioned that we can use
GT-R GTR R35 NISSAN OEM DIFFERENTIAL FLUID SINGLE CAN

Castrol SAF-XJ
is recommended for the following applications:

·
BMW car rear axles equipped with limited slip differentials.

·
Light commercial vehicles and four wheel drive axles fitted with
limited slip differentials

I found it in Amazon. it's listed $40/lit. Would it be the same as listed under BMW

?

any input on this. It's hard to find SAF-XJ

Thanks

Castro SAF-XJ Differential Fluid

I have been advised by many BMW dealers in bay area -SF/SJ that I don't really need to change diff.fluid for my 06 X5 4.4. The fluid is life time. I understand that it has to be Castro SAF-XJ. I know it is hard to find it. I also come across at amazon.com with searching on SAF-XJ.

Any suggestions to buy SAF-XJ?

Thanks

Well, you don't really need to change it, but if you want to, it isn't a bad idea, and as long as you use the correct fluid there is little downside to doing so.

I changed my diff fluid around 80k and I have to say both front and rear were in excellent shape. I was very surprised and based on the condition of my fluid would agree that it can go 100k in the X5. However, I would change it at 100k regardless.

The SAF-XJ is really just Syntec 75W-140 and the SAF-XO is just Syntec 75W-90. I wouldn't be concerned with finding the "European" stuff. You can bet BMW dealers are running Syntec.
