Old X5 3.0D vs New X5 3.0D ( BHP Diff ? )

Hi there,
Does anyone out there know of any spec changes that BMW did to obtain more BHP from the later engined diesels ?

Does anyone have any actual facts and figures of old power figures compared to the latest diesel BHP figure ?

Old X5 .....184 Bhp and 410Nm Torque
New X5.....218Bhp and 500Nm Torque

For obvious reasons BMW wont tells us what they done to increase Power on the new X5 3.0D but what we do know from a specification point of view is that they increased the engine C.C. from just over 2900 to almost 3000.
The other mods we measured are 200Grms more Boost pressure and we assume that the ECU has been reprogrammed with different Fuel and Injection parametres.

Pegbox, did you go to see ALLARD?Any news?

So where would my 2003 (oct) X5 fit in? I`m sure the stealer quoted me just over 200bhp for the car?? but I never did read up and check any details.

As far as I know, it involves a change in the Intercooler and therefore an improved engine map to exploit this additional cooling.

New (i.e. facelift) model X5s were delivered in the UK from early Dec 2004 onwards. I seem to remember that the 218bhp engine was only fitted to facelift cars.

When you say changes to the intercooler, I presume you mean bigger; and if so where do they fit it ? Is there some kind of bumber mod, or is the fan modded ?

Its a good gain ( 40 BHP ) with just an intercooler upgrade and a differently mapped ECU, I guess it just shows the power potential of a turbo'd oil burner....

Yep, I do mean bigger and more efficient. I presume they must locate it in the same place since my brother had the engine replaced under warranty on his 3.0d and as a special favour BMW fitted the latest 3.0d engine to his late 2003 X5. In addition to more power the engine felt smoother and quieter.
