Also interesting that the 3 of us S/RS4 owners all have the "is" model X5 too. Which makes sense

Dewd, a 4.8is is your first BMW? Now that takes balls. I love mine, when everything works right its an absolute blast. When it doesnt, I want it stolen. The most complicated vehicle I have ever owned. This is my 6th BMW. Its so much fun humbling the ricers and others, but never thought I would be married to two women at the same time. Just have to figure out how to manage the highs and lows.

The 4.6is is my 5th. 2 of the other 4 were M's.

Wow that IS interesting! I drive an RS4 as my daily driver too. Owned many BMW's but never an X, so this 4.8is is my first SAV attempt. Just gave back an '06 Range Rover Sport.
Nice to see so many Audi/BMW owners, both great vehicles. |

I meant the sentence in the sense that the S4 is the vehicle I prefer to drive on a daily basis. It is very light and quick, and the feel behind the wheel is exhilarating. But "yes" it is our first BMW. My wife was jealous of the S4 and wanted a fun vehicle of her own. She likes to be up higher in the winter and having more sheetmetal around her, so we looked at SUVs/SAVs. Cayenne's styling didn't appeal much to us and every option is "a la carte" including the $4K pano roof, the ML55 was not that exciting and no pano option, the ML63 was a blast to drive and a very nice vehicle but way too expensive and still no pano, and the Q7 has a pano but it is too big and slow. So, the 4.8is was the perfect choice with great power and appealing styling, a pano roof that really opens (not just a small portion), and a price tag that made it affordable. |

Well, for $450 shipped to me, I decided to buy a set of OEM Style 58. Thanks to LeMansX5 and ncx for letting me know they will clear. Last thing left to do is to order a set of snow tires and I will be set.
TR said the 2 approved sizes are 255/55 or 235/60, and I am thinking of going skinny. Anyone running 235/60? The 2 I am looking at are the Blizzak DMV1 and Michelin Latitude Alpin. Any opinions on either? Speaking of tires, upon coming home from picking the X5 up, we heard a loud noise in the garage and found out that one of the valve stems had blown, so it was time to put the spare on. However, I discovered that BMW uses a special "jack pad" to fit in the jack area, I never found it, so I improvised. Does this "jack pad" come with the vehicle? If so, where is it located? If not, I'll buy a set but do I also need to buy the "adapter" to use with a floor jack? I read the manual every which way and search but I did not find the answer to the next question. Can the system be reprogrammed to unlock all doors when the vehicle is put back into "Park" or the ignition turned off? Thanks for any feedback. Last edited by LPMM; 11-23-2009 at 08:01 PM. |

If your winter driving consists of both dry and snow use, I would get the 255-55-18's. That size in a true snow tire will work just fine for any amount of snow. I guess if you lived in Aspen and drove in snow only all winter long, maybe 235 is a better bet. But the 255's are already going to look pretty small under that 4.8is and give up a ton of dry performance to you normal summer set-up.
