Lots of Winter miles to cover - Wheel/Tyre advice setup please.

Kev what did you do in the end?I am wondering too what I can and can't do it terms of ditching for the winter at least my staggered setup 285/45 19" rear 255/50 19" front(on a sport 2004 3.0d) I will stick 17" alloys on all round if possible and the fattest tires possible whatever they maybe?

Not Kev, but.. I'd say go for the widest wheels you can afford. I just got back from a ski trip this weekend. Sunday was a large storm. Driving in snow most of the trip. The Hakka 5's on 18's performed great. Much better than the 17's did before. If I could have afforded to go with wider wheels, that would have been even better. More tread = more traction. A narrow tire or a wide tire.. both only have the one / same outside edge.

The car is a 2003 E53 3.0d Sport so no problem with brake clearance.

Omodos,not at all!By putting the OE 235/65/17 ,you will riding on EXACTLY the same rolling diametre as the 19"s you car came with,so no odometer difference.

powers thanks for the reply, and sorry to all for hijacking this post, I NEED a softer ride in Cyprus the roads have got so many potholes that the stiff suspension on my set-up currently is enough to loosen your fillings....! out to look for the 17's alloys now.....

you will be able to find 17" OEM alloys all day long on craigslist for $200-400 for all 4! some with summer rubber even! just be patient...

17s are just want you want for shitty roads. Better ride and less chance of damaging a sidewall via pinching. 17s are also cheaper and tend to wear more evenly than wider tyres on bigger rims. On dirt/gravel roads you also get more 'bite through'. It also means that your spare will be a full match for your road wheels...

@Fraser cheers matey for the advice, it’s not that I will take the x5 to our local mount Olympus or anything but the sports suspension is stiff@sprocket1200 hehehe craigslist? alas I am pretty far from the u.s and shipping out the 17”alloys to Cyprus will cost me as much as the alloys, I have to look locally….@Fraser or anyone, got any pics of an x5 with the 17” alloys n the 235/65 tires look like?, also rims are narrower so do I need some kind of spacers in the rear to “push” the wheels out so they don’t look sunken into the wheel well?
