Dull Screen

Can anyone help? my screen colour as gone very dull on my head unit does this mean the pixels have gone? can this be fixed?

You don't say which type head unit you have Multi Info Display (MID) or Navigation (NAV). If it's the NAV screen try adjusting the contrast in the hidden menu. Press the menu button, select settings then press and hold the menu button until it takes you into the hidden menu (takes about 10 seconds). Select the onboard computer and then functions and contrast. Adjust the slider up.

Also check that there is no dirt blocking the photo cell behind the small hole below the screen. If you shine a torch directly into this hole the screen should brighten up (compensating for daylight).

If you have the standard MID unit, there are backlight bulbs that can be easily replaced if they have blown (both in the MID and instrument cluster). The common pixels issue relates some pixels working and others not resulting in garbled text. This has nothing to do with the backlights but is caused by a problem with the ribbon cable connector inside the MID and also the check control in the instrument cluster.
BMW will not repair this problem (just replace the entire MID or cluster unit) however there are a couple of outfits in the UK who can rectify this design/materials fault.

So where is the bulb, what bulb do I need and how do I get to it?
