Whistle ENGINE CYLINDERS PROSITION LOCATION

On a x5 8 cylinder how are the cylinders numbered. on the right passenger side front cylinder is it 1 to 4 starting from the front of the cylinder or 4 to 1... same question for the driver left side... need to change engine coil number 3 which one is it.....lol....

This method remains confusing for many people???
It appeared to be different on some graphics, here's how I found it somewhere else:

Most Common
In the most common method for cylinder numbering of a V8 engine, when facing the engine from the front of the car, the cylinder on your actual right side and closest to you is the number one cylinder. Then jumping to your actual left side, the closest cylinder to you is the number two cylinder. This back and forth counting continues in this pattern for all eight cylinders. In effect, all odd-numbered cylinders are on your actual right side, while all the even numbers are on your left side.

Just curious as to why you'd dig up an old 4 year thread to add information that isn't relevant to the e53...as well as the thread being resolved?

The question was specifically asked as to the cylinder order of an X5 V8 (which thankfully all 4 V8 engines used in the e53 production run have the same cylinder order ... especially since the OP failed to identify which V8 they were asking about).

So the correct answer is as posted by m5james in post #2.

E53 V8s:
  1. m62tu b44
  2. m62tu b46
  3. n62 b44
  4. n62 b48

And please know that I really am curious as why this thread was brought back to life...I'm not trying to beat up on anyone...maybe I missed the reasoning.

Let's not forget about the M60 in urge 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0...then what I've got in my 7 which is the non-VANOS M62 B44.

Let's not forget about the M60 in urge 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0...then what I've got in my 7 which is the non-VANOS M62 B44. In not 100% certain about the 4.6, 4.8 & 4.9/5.0 engines, but I'm going to assume they're the same.
