UPDATE! According to the mechanic, who is highly regarded here in town, I did not have an oil separator problem, they ran a pressure test and found out there was no problem with it. However, they did find that the thermostat was stuck open and there was too much gasoline was let into the engine and therefore the smoke. I picked it up and have driven it for about 1000 miles now and no problems...knock on wood...so I guess he was right.

I've had a thermostat fail open as well....didnt you notice that the engine never reached full operating temp? That would have been the biggest clue that the thermostat wasn't doing its job.

I did notice that the thermostat always was on cold, but then when I noticed it was when it was really cold outside like 15 degrees F, and it was not a long trip most of the time since I just live like 10 minutes away from work. So even though I read on this board that thermostat problems are indicated by continuous cold, I did not think it could have been me because I probably did not give enough time for it to get to optimal temp. I do know it is not good to do this...:/

A broken thermostat really kills gas mileage as worst just because the ECU is wanting the engine at a certain temp, so it uses more gas to get it up to temp. I've had 2 thermostats go bad and the gas mileage went to crap, fortunately it failed open instead of closed so it didn't cause overheating issues.

Good to hear.... oil mixed with the fuel that got washed down the cylinder walls doesn't lubricate as well. :p

Yeah...i figured that was the thing to do, and besides I had an oil change back in July so I figured it was about time for another one, i know BMW oil is supposed to last longer than that, but I just have this OCD about getting the oil changed about every 6 months
