Just a question. Does the throttle body ever need any cleaning? If you open the butterfly and do a whipe around. As you mentioned though, would the butterfly be stuck as its electronic?

Yes, looking at the throttle body I removed recently, it needs to be cleaned assuming it is old (I'd say every year or 2 in normal conditions). The butterfly is not really stuck in fact, you can open it carefully, no problem (at least on a 3.0), so you can spray a carb cleaner and whipe it.

Thank You
I've cleaned my previous cars/trucks, I do remember them being a bit black. Did you need to replace any seals Or just remove & clean and bolt back on?

It seems that there are 2 models, one with the seal #2 on this diagram: RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 3.0i Throttle Housing Assy, and another without this seal. My X didn't have the seal so there was nothing to be worry about except maybe the state of the seal which is located into a groove at the rear side of the throttle body housing, facing the intake manifold (this is a red/pinkish rubber seal). Of course, while you are at it, it worths to check the state of the intake boot (common place for cracks and air leaks) and to put some contact cleaner then dielectrical grease onto the throttle housing connector.

Was there any noticable difference when the throttle body was cleaned?
