X5 performs awesome in snow

We have a big snow here in Western NC and I live on a steep mountain. I sold a crappy Dodge Dakota 4wd and acquired my 2003 X5 3.0 this past year. It is so much better than the Dodge in the snow (and better then the Dodge in every other way too, especially the braking) The creeping downhill function really is useful for me too. Yesterday, I blew past a 4wd suv who had given up trying to get up our mountain.
I really appreciate this board and the folks who have posted detailed proceedures. With this board's assistance, I have updated my 100k car with new pulley wheels, tensioners, repaired a broken window regulator, fixed the defective rear tail light, fixed a malfunctioning theft alarm switch, replaced the MAS and changed the oil on my own. I had a professional change the trans, diff and transfer fluids. I am ordering an oil level sensor today which I will replace at the next oil change.

thanks for the feedback on both the performance of your X5 in the snow and the value that you receive from the site. Although it is purely voluntary, Premier Memberships are greatly appreciated and help to keep the site operating and growing.

Happy Holidays from your friends at Xoutpost.com!

It's posts like these that make me wish I had a winter wheel set-up for my X5. It's pretty silly to have an AWD vehicle that has to sit in the garage during snow storms because it would be a sled.

Although I miss the look and handling of my 20" 214's during this time of year, my 18" style 69's mated with Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires are the schnizzle in the winter

What makes it even more dumb on my part is that I have the ability to switch them whenever I want at the farm. So I could easily swap them out with the 20's at the change of the forecast and then back again once everything clears up.

It's nice that's it's easy to change the tires....get a nice jack and some air tools (optional) and you can be swapped in no more than 30 min rollin' with the 20's or 19's (in my case) out for a nice night on the town.
I haven't had big snow yet for my X in Milwaukee, but I can't wait. I wish you could turn the AWD off (or can you?) as I love spinning around as I do with my IS300...but you can't have everything I guess.

you can't turn off AWD, but you can disable the DSC (dynamic stability control) to have a lot more fun in the snow. Look for the DSC button right in front of the gear shift.

dipstick,
Where in "western nc"?
I live on top of Eagles Nest Mtn, at 5,000 ft elevation, looking
down on Laurel Ridge CC and Waynesville...

I'm with UCrew: ante in a few quid and become a Premo
member. Yes, the X is a really good ride for winter in the mtns
of western NC!
