I am having the same issues here... first symptom, memory board inop, intermittent steering wheel retraction and spotty reaction from the power seat. Today both the power seat and steering wheel won't move.
Has anyone successfully fixed this without having to go to the dealership? Worse case scenario, if I needed to take it somewhere to be fixed, how much am I looking at $$$$? Thank you for your help. |

Approximately $400 or so for the module, plus labour to install it, likely $50 - $100 more. Cheaper if you find a used one, or buy one of e-Bay. You can put it in yourself if you are handy.

I am an Electrical Engineer. I took my module apart and troubleshot the entire thing. The problem is in the micro-controller, and without a proper soldering station for putting on a new micro-controller, and the code to load onto the micro-controller, I was unable to repair it. I bought the part for ~$186.00 from Bimmerspecialist.com. If you are reasonably handy, and have a torx 20 screwdriver, you can replace the module yourself. You will likely break some of the plastic clips on the trim panel that holds it in, but it will still go back on without being loose. If you are concerned about it, buy the plastic trim piece as well. Having replaced the part, everything works perfectly again, although if you want the memory position (1, 2, or 3) to be associated with a key again (for the vehicle key memory), I believe you have to visit the dealer for re-programming. Hope that helps, and always remember, never pay someone to fix what you can break three times for the same cost! |
