P0172 System too rich bank 1

Check engine light came on today on first start up.
Got the code read:

P0172 System too rich bank 1

They reset the check engine signal and it did not come back on.

Did a dirty/ failing sensor trigger this? Possibly MAF from posts I searched. Is cleaning a MAF recommended or is replacement a must?

What you do you guys think?

Thanks,

Weasel will become famous soon enough
For rich mixture faults the usual culprit is the MAF. If you have ann aftermarket air intake/filter like a K&N which uses an oiled cotton filter I'd say clean the MAF as a thin film of oil can get on the sensor and hinder the readings, but if you have the OEM dry filter it most likely would be the MAF itself.

Thanks,

I do have an OEM dry filter.

I guess if its the MAF itself, cleaning it might be worth a try. I have seen MAF cleaning sprays at the auto store.

Also we will see if the CEL comes back on.

I had this a few months ago and the code reader says O2 sensor. It was NOT the problem. I have an 03 3.0 and the problem was the rubber boot/elbow from the intake had many cracks and holes. Its the elbow that goes into the engine block. The part was $16 but it was a pain to get at. After replacing it and reseting the computer the code never came back.

Description of boot:
90 degress with 2 other inputs.
Approx 4" diameter
Rubber

I was told that the reason the O2 sensor code came up is the air fuel mixture will be off since there is a leak in the intake.

Good luck.
